Rule Breakers

These zines can be be folded out as posters, each one representing a woman with a story about how they broke rules set by society—Josephine Baker, Rani of Jhansi, and Nina Simone. These women went their own way to create change in the world, and to symbolize this, I decided to break the rules of design. I let images and type bleed onto the other pages or outside of the poster, overlap texts and images, some textboxes be upside down or tilted, break images and text blocks, played with dimension, added analog doodles, etc. I also decided to make these designs different from each other and have different elements, as if they were all breaking the rules set by the other.

I also designed an artifact for each zine; an invisible ink kit for Josephine Baker, a thumb piano for Nina Simone, and a stationery set for Rani of Jhansi.
